Tango
Learn to Dance Tango
Ballroom Tango was born in the slums of Buenos Aires, Argentina in the late 19th century where it was stylized by the Gauchos. It arrived in the U.S. in 1921, when silent film star Rudolph Valentino demonstrated a highly stylized form of Argentine Tango in The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The dance varied greatly from performer to performer and was eventually standardized during the 1920s. More recently, it has been featured in movies including True Lies and Scent of a Woman.
Tango is an angular dance characterized by a close hold and an emphasis on stopping actions. The feet are picked up and placed on the floor instead of skimming the floor as in the other ballroom dances. There is no rise and fall and no sway. Movement in Tango is stealthy, almost cat-like and an unmistakable staccato feel.
