Brett Morris

Brett was born and raised in Chicago. Both competitive and artistic, he was captain of the fencing team and deeply involved in theatre as a writer, director and actor. In his senior year of high school he was out-danced by his best friend at a school dance. Vowing that would never happen again, Brett began Ballroom dancing and continued through college, competing as an amateur while acquiring his BFA in theatre directing. Finding dance to be the perfect medium for both his expressive and competitive sides, Brett began teaching after college, helping numerous students win their pro/am divisions in Chicago. He joined Go Dance in 2015. He currently competes in the Rising Star and Open American Smooth Divisions with his wife, Keeley, and holds multiple DVIDA teaching certifications.

“I love helping students accomplish something they didn’t think they could do. The moment when a student steps onto a dance floor and feels confident, elegant, and beautiful is my favorite part of teaching. When my students learn that they can dance beautifully, they have the confidence to try other things in life they didn’t believe were possible.”

Brett’s greatest joy in teaching is when his students have the “lightbulb” moment, so he tries various approaches for presenting concepts until that happens for each and every student. Once that lightbulb goes on, he believes in practicing the movement in slow-motion to develop the muscle memory that will allow students to execute it at full tempo while maintaining technique. His patience creates an enjoyable atmosphere for students to develop confidence and become the dancer they want to be, and his background in theatre helps him bring out the inner performer in everyone!

When he isn’t teaching, Brett loves practicing with his wife Keeley to prepare for their next Ballroom competition. Off the dance floor, Brett is a foodie, travel enthusiast, and exotic car afficionado. You’ll find him mixing up his latest cocktail recipe, studying French language and culture, and dreaming of the next time he gets to drive a Ferrari!
